ML45-P. PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES IN AGING THAT IMPACT NUTRITION
During the past decade, geriatric research has demonstrated that metabolism and removal of the body’s waste material changes significantly with normal aging, common diseases, and medications. Recent studies have indicated that a high percentage of frail older adults suffer from malnutrition which is related to inadequate protein intake. We will review the numerous physiological changes that occur with aging, diseases, and medications as well as describe ways to achieve daily nutritional requirements. Since loss of appetite is common in aging adults, we will speak about the management interventions to improve loss of appetite. We will focus on providing common vitamins and increase protein with aging. Preparing foods that are nutritious and easier to eat will be reviewed. We will also share tools that help to identify those aging older adults who are at risk for impaired nutrition.
